Promising youngster Clive Gregory, 18, has signed a professional contract with Liverpool FC. The young defender can play either Left Back or Centre Back and will provide Liverpool with more depth in the squad. Pundits described Gregory as the next 'Carragher'.

"Clive has shown great quality in defense in recent trainings and that is when I decided to promote him. I'm sure he'll break into the team soon, no doubt about that. He is incredible good in mid-air and can make some fantastic tackle. A one to watch in the future."

Champions League 3rd Round Qualifier - Liverpool 2 – 0 Wisla Krakow

[source - www.liverpoolfc.tv]

Ryan Thompson's first match as Liverpool manager saw Liverpool strengthening their passage to the group stages with a convincing victory over Polish side Wisla Krakow. Just 3 days before their opening Premiership match against Sunderland, Liverpool had a chance to warm up before their season begins.

Dirk Kuyt and Fernando Torres paired up at the front and both players threathened their European opponent and Kuyt forced their keeper Pawelek an early save in the 1st minute. But Liverpool puts themselves into the lead thanks to Xabi Alonso, who rose the highest to head a Steven Gerrard corner pass the hopeless keeper for the first goal under Thompson's reign.

Wisla Krakor showed no hope of breaking the Liverpool defence and the game could have been extended even further if not for Pawelek's form between the post. But soon the visitors found themselves down to 10 men after Sobolewski received his marching orders for a rough tackle in the 2nd half. Soon afterwards the match has been decided and substitute Robbie Keane settled the nerves. Keane outpaced the defender before firing into the net for his 1st goal in his debut.

Liverpool played good quality football and let's hope it continues throughout the season

Sunderland 2 - 2 Liverpool

[source - www.thesun.co.uk]

Former Reds Djibril Cisse haunted his former club with a fine display in an entertaining opening match which saw Liverpool snatching a draw after being 2 goals down. Cisse burst into pace 10 minutes into the game and beats Reina on his first attempt, sliding the ball neatly into the bottom corner. The lead increased 10 minutes later, with Cisse playing a key role in the goal. The Frenchman skipped past Aurelio and set up his teammate Steed Malbranque to slam the ball into the net. A dream start for Sunderland and such an abysmal and embarrassing display from Liverpool.

But after half time, the introduction of hardworking Dutchman Dirk Kuyt completely changed the game and Liverpool pulled one back in the 48th minute. Robbie Keane was put through by a lovely Alonso pass and the Irishman professionally rounded up Gordon before slicing the ball into the empty net. That completely revived Liverpool and they snatched an equaliser shortly afterwards, courtesy of Fernando Torres's goal after Dirk Kuyt's amazing work on the wing.

Liverpool almost completed a remarkable turnaround when new signing Mark Noble's header forced Gordon with a point-blank save in the closing stages but Sunderland held on as the match ended in an entertaining draw.

Liverpool 2 - 1 Middlesbrough

Gerrard sends Liverpool up ahead after a wonderful counter-attack move, ending with Steven Gerrard drilling a low shot into the bottom corner. But the captain injured himself while scoring that, thus limping out so early in the game. A worrying moment for Liverpool but Middlesbrough conceded a penalty when Robert Huth handled the ball. Dirk Kuyt slotted the penalty cooly to double the lead. Tuncay managed a fine goal in injury time, volleying a cross straight into the top corner but it was too late.

Champions League 3rd Round Qualifier - Wisla Krakow 0 - 3 Liverpool
(Liverpool won 5-0 on aggregate)

Ryan Thompson decided to hand some fringe players a chance to shine, and look how they did. A double from hot-prospect Hungarian Krisztian Nemeth puts Liverpool 2-0 up at half time, one a header and another a fine strike from outside the penalty box. Fabio Aurelio wraps up a perfect night for the Reds when the Brazilian curled in a delicious free kick from 30 yards into the bottom corner.

Despite the big victory, we were handed a tough group stage. We were drawn into the same group as Barcelona, Celtic and Dynamo Kiev. It will be really tough but with the quality in our squad, we can beat anyone.

Aston Villa 1 - 2 Liverpool

Xabi Alonso curled in a last minute free kick as Liverpool snatched a late late winner. Gerrard is yet again unavaliable from his injury last week and it seems that Liverpool is missing that. Liverpool took the lead in the 24th minute when
Robbie Keane's pin-point cross found Torres unmarked, leaving the Spaniard to finish it off. But Liverpool conceded a soft goal when Reina mistakenly ran out in a corner, when the swerving ball met Sidwell to header it into the unguarded net.

Krisztian Nemeth was denied by Guzan twice in the 2nd half as the home side defended for their lives for the point. However, in the last minute Reo-Coker fouled Keane 25 yards from the goal, and Xabi Alonso stepped up to curl in the winner into the top corner.

2 wins out of 3 and still unbeaten. A solid start for the Reds. Let's hope that we can push on even further.

Liverpool 4 – 1 Manchester United

[source - www.4thegame.com]

One of the most biggest match of the season, Liverpool vs Manchester United. It could have not been any more fierce than that. Full packed stadium of Anfield and both teams started the kick-off. Liverpool only had an injury of Benayoun to worry about, as the Israeli picked up a ligament injury in the international commitment. However, Manchester United will be without their key player Ronaldo through injury he sustained while with Portugal.

12 minutes into the game and the tension has already risen to a high level. Rio Ferdinand clearly took out Fernando Torres after the Spaniard is through on goal, and was received a straight red. A big blown to Manchester United. The resulting free kick saw Xabi Alonso taking it, and a little lay-off from Gerrard saw Alonso smashing the ball past Van der Sar to put the home side into a lead.

The Spaniard continued his rich vein of scoring form with yet another brilliant strike. This time he played a cheeky one-two with Robbie Keane before smashing an unstoppable shot onto the crossbar and into the net. Even better Steven Gerrard made it 3-0 with Dossena picking out the captain from the left wing for Stevie G to smash it into the net.

Although down with 10 men, Manchester United did not give up. Ji-Sung Park showed a dazzling piece of skill which completely skins past Carragher and Agger and even better he rounded up Reina to score what is an absolute delicious individual goal. Half time ended 3-1 with Liverpool still in control.

Liverpool soon found themselves down to 10 men as well as Mascherano harshly brought down Rooney in the penalty box. Mascherano saw red and Berbatov went to take the penalty kick. But Reina was at his best, and dived the right way to keep Liverpool’s hope of registering a huge victory alive.

The Red Devils continued to threaten, with Berbatov and Rooney constantly forcing Reina to make a couple of good saves. The closest they game is when goalscorer Ji-Sung Park’s header hitting the crossbar. However, Liverpool had the final say in the game and a Xabi Alonso free kick delivery saw Riera in the right place to tap the ball into the back of the net for his 1st goal in a Liverpool shirt and Liverpool's marvelous victory over the champions.

Champions League Group Stages - Barcelona FC 2 - 1 Liverpool

In the year 2007 both teams faced each other in the last 16 of the knockout stages, with Liverpool just knocked out the Spanish giants via away goals. Now they are drawn in the same group stage as each other and a competitive match was to be held in Camp Nou.

Fernando Torres leads the Reds with Steven Gerrard supporting him just behind but they could not sparkle the successful partnership they had last season. Barcelona took control and deservingly broke the Liverpool defence. Samuel Eto'o received a cheeky backheel from Lionel Messi before wrong-footing Pepe Reina with a sweet side-footed shot into the corner.

Robbie Keane's introduction in the 2nd half changes the complex of the game, with the Irishman forming a dangerous partnership with his fellow colleague Fernando Torres. On the half hour mark, Liverpool slams in an equaliser via substitute Mark Noble. Riera swinged in a deep cross which Mark Noble lurked unmarked into the penalty box to smash the ball past Valdes.

But Barcelona's almighty team didn't give up and Xavi found the winner for the home side, played through by Henry to grab the 3 points for Barca.

Liverpool 1 - 0 Stoke City

Fernando Torres missed the match through injury and Robbie Keane instead paired up with Dirk Kuyt in the starting line-up. Stoke defended with 10 men behind the ball but Liverpool somehow unlocked the defence with a winner late in the 2nd half, a 80th minute strike from Gerrard sealing a narrow win against the new boys.

Carling Cup 3rd Round - Birmingham City 1 - 2 Liverpool

The Carling Cup saw Ryan Thompson giving his young players a start, the youngsters of Emiliano Insua, Clive Gregory, Damian Plessis, Krisztian Nemeth and David N'Gog getting the chance of showing the manager that they are good enough to play in the first team.

Despite the inspiration of Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso, Liverpool failed to finish off their chances and some players were left to regret on how they missed a clear opportunity. N'Gog forced Maik Taylor to make a couple of key saves and Xabi Alonso smashed in a 30 yard rocket onto the crossbar. Birmingham should have won the match, if not for Kevin Phillip's missed penalty. The striker was awarded a golden chance of putting the Championship side up but the strike wasn't pretty, as he miscued it wide.

Neither teams could not break each other, but Sebastian Larsson hits an absolute screamer in the 88th minute. The midfielder was not closed down by anyone from 30 yards and he decided to hit one, which rockets past the stretching Reina. Heartbreak for Liverpool but as Birmingham fans thought that the final whistle was blew, Liverpool hitted back. Guess who it was?

Xabi Alonso smashes in a delightful half volley from a Degen cross into the bottom corner and St. Andrew went silient as the home fan felt that they were robbed. But extra time was next and it was certain that anyone can find a winner.

Ryan Thompson made a clever substitution, with 10 minutes to go until penalty, he introduced the speedy Ryan Babel into the match and from there Birmingham looked wobbly. Babel's immense pace completely disrupted the exhausted defence and the Dutchman soon grabbed a late winner, latching onto an Alonso long ball and slots the ball into the net.

Celebration from Liverpool as they fought off an impressive effort from Birmingham City. But the 4th round of the Carling Cup saw Liverpool drawing against the holders, Tottenham Hotspur.

Everton 3 - 1 Liverpool

A very disappointing performance from the Reds. The Toffees clinched a big derby win over their rivals, consigning Liverpool to their first league defeat under Ryan Thompson. A brace from Louis Saha and a goal from Fellaini secured Everton a magnificent win, although Robbie Keane manages to pull one back in the middle of the match.

Only two EPL matches in September, and we could have done better. But we're still in contention for the title, and that's the most important thing.

Early October 2008

Champions League Group Stages - Liverpool FC 4 - 1 Celtic

Liverpool looked to get their feets up again after their recent disappointing defeat to local rival Everton. And a crucial game against the Scottish Champions looked interesting.

Liverpool instantly hit a goal in the 2nd minute with Dirk Kuyt nodding a cross beyond Boruc. Celtic looked fragile in defence and Fernando Torres hit a quick brace, as the Spaniard beats the Polish goalkeeper twice in 2 minutes. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink somehow pulls a goal back for Celtic, their only chance. The striker expertly drills a volley past Reina and Liverpool was denied a clean sheet again.

Javier Mascherano did add an icing of a cake in the 60th minute, hitting a rebound home after Torres's early attempt was well saved by Boruc. Liverpool finish the match as a worth winner of the match and they can pull off a lot of positive.

Manchester City 3 - 4 Liverpool FC

[source - www.mirror.co.uk]

One of the greatest and dramatic comeback that Liverpool has achieved. The Reds fought from 3-1 down and still manages to score 3 to completly stun Manchester City.

Ryan Thompson opted for the same line-up which beat Celtic last Wednesday but the team couldn't find the success they have in Europe into the domestic league. Elano finished off a stunning counter-attack with a crisp finish, before Philip Degen notched his first goal for the Reds with a fabulous curling effort from 20 yards. But Manchester City showed great threat and both Richard Dunne and Jo added a goal each to make it an uphill task for Liverpool.

Ryan Thompson motivated his players and introducted Robbie Keane and Riera. The change however seems to be one of the most logical substitution of the season. Keane replaces Torres and provides a dangerous threat in air and ground and the Irishman sets up Riera to round up Hart for a goal.

Things got better for Liverpool. Carragher sets up Robbie Keane for what is a crucial goal. The Irishman makes no mistake and beats Joe Hart with a cheeky lob.

Manchester City's nerves broke down late in the game, with Liverpool piling loads of pressures and Robbie Keane grabbed a deserving winner in the 89th minute. Gerrard slams a beautiful long ball and Keane picked it up before slipping the ball past the advancing Hart. Major eruption from the away end and sadness at the home side. The valiant Liverpool side have won the match in dramatic style.

Liverpool FC 1 - 0 Wigan Athletic

Liverpool defended in units and deservingly clinched the victory, although the margin could have been bigger. The only goal came via the captain Steven Gerrard, who was picked out by Riera to steer the high ball into the net. Special mention to Jamie Carragher and Fabio Aurelio, who made some solid tackle to keep a rare clean sheet for the Reds.

Reina - We're Way Too Vulnerable At The Back

[source - www.thesun.co.uk

Reina had some of his fine moments in his career at Anfield as he claimed the Golden Glove for 3 seasons in a row. His stunning display earns Liverpool as one of the most organised defence in England.

But this season Reina have already conceded 15 goals in 12 games, and kept only 4 clean sheets in this season. If it's not for Liverpool's firepower, Liverpool would have drop points in their recent game. The Reds have managed an impressive 16 goals in 7 matches, only bettered by Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and surprise contenders Hull City.

"We are lethal up front, with Fernando Torres, Xabi Alonso, Robbie Keane, Steven Gerrard and much more, we have nothing to fear. But we depend on them scoring in the last moment too much. If their firepower runs out and our bad run at the back still carries on, we'll start dropping crucial points."

Ryan Thompson also added "If we wanted to maintain our title challenge then we needed an organised defence. We got an excellent defender under Jamie Carragher but we are not a one man team. We have other 10 players who have to do their duties."

Other than that, Ryan Thompson is full of praise of his side after such a good start to the season and congratulates match winner Robbie Keane, who came off the bench in the Manchester City match to score two crucial goals for an incredible comeback from the Reds. He admits that leaving the Irishman on the bench is a big mistake, and promises that the Torres-Keane combination will soon develop into one of the fiercest partnership of the world.

"Robbie has made such an impact when he came off the bench. He has shown that he is worth the money that the club has spent. I did not drop him into the bench because he did not perform. Dirk Kuyt scored in the Champions League and I wanted to give him another chance. Torres scored a brace against Celtic as well and Ryan Babel hadn't been playing for a while, so I handed him a start."

"But clearly the fans does not want a rotation policy to develop in the Liverpool team again so I'll promise that Robbie Keane will start up more often with Torres. Both player are world-class and the two can become one of the most deadliest partnership that Liverpool has ever had."

Late October

Champions League Group Stages – Dynamo Kiev 0 – 4 Liverpool FC

The Hungarian Krisztian Nemeth was handed yet another start for Liverpool as he hoped to impress and the Hungarian did not fail to do that.

Nemeth rose high to nod a Steven Gerrard free kick under 7 minutes and notched another after a fine Robbie Keane pull back which left Nemeth to make a simple tap in. Steven Gerrard later stroke a beauty in the 2nd half before substitute Fernando Torres showed his superior skills on the ball by dribbling the ball past 3 defenders and rounding up the goalkeeper easily to record a superb Champions League away win.

Chelsea FC 0 – 1 Liverpool FC

[source - www.anfield-online.co.uk]

Chelsea knew that this is a must game win, as they hope to clear off their recent embarrassing defeat to Middlesbrough by notching up a victory against Liverpool. Chelsea haven’t had the best start to the season yet and know that to get into title contention again they have to beat their arch rivals.

But Chelsea slumped to yet another defeat, this time in their mighty fortress of Stamford Bridge as Fernando Torres’s 17th minute strike separated the 2 side. 2 out of 3, says Ryan Thompson as he targeted Arsenal in December after defeating both Manchester United and Chelsea this season.

Liverpool, for the first time this season, go top of the table.

Liverpool FC 2 – 0 Portsmouth

Fernando Torres continued his goalscoring spree when he notched two world-class goals against strugglers Portsmouth. A fabulous strike from 30 yards easily beats David James, while Torres slams in a superb shot from a tight angle.

A brilliant month as we are now 3 points cleared off the table. Even better we kept quite a few clean sheet as well.
